Our Heritage

Joseph A. Roberts Sr. first entered funeral service in 1896, in Medfield, working for Alonzo B. Parker, who was the town appointed "undertaker". He purchased the business from Mr. Parker in 1908, and started "Roberts Funeral Home".
His son, Joseph A. Roberts Jr., joined the firm in 1931, and assumed the position of President in 1945 on the death Joseph A. Roberts Sr. Having previously established funeral homes in Wrentham and Franklin, he purchased the current Millis property in 1952, which continues to be part of the current Roberts-Mitchell Funeral Service organization.
In 1967, H. Tracy Mitchell, son in law of Mr. Roberts Jr. joined the firm and continued the family tradition of superior service to Medfield, Millis and surrounding communities. In 1978, on retirement of Mr. Roberts, Mr. Mitchell assumed the position of President, and Senior Funeral Director, and continues in this position to this day.
Shortly after the death of Mr. Roberts Jr., Tracy and his wife Emma (Roberts) relocated with their five children from the Millis facility to the main branch connected to the Medfield facility.
Continuing the family tradition, Tracy's two sons joined the family business and began their formal education at New England Institute at Mt. Ida College, Newton, MA. Wayne was a 1998 graduate of F.I.N.E., (Funeral Institute of New England), Westwood, MA and Greg continued his funeral service education at Canton University, Mortuary Science Division, Canton, NY and F.I.N.E. in Westwood, MA.
In 2001 Tracy and Emma experienced a great loss, losing their younger son Greg W. Mitchell, while he was enlisted in the US Navy. Although he was unable to complete his studies at Mount Ida and F.I.N.E., his dedication and loyalty to the family business was admired by many.
Tracy continued the proud tradition of being a leader in excellence in funeral service until his unexpected death on August 14, 2017.  At the time of his death, he was transitioning the ownership of the business to his son-in-law, Thomas Caruso.
Thomas and his wife Jennifer (Tracy's daughter) are now continuing the family tradition.  They live with their 4 children at the main funeral home in Medfield.
